Fields and Leaves

ginkgo leaves covered the ground

scattering and sweeping upward

as I walked through

the dreamscape city

pink and blue pigeons

fat and chattering

walked with me as guides

we spoke through the unspoken

a connection equally understood

requiring no words

they knew, so they followed

and I knew, so I invited

they took me to a field

in the middle of this city

I thought I saw you

but couldn’t be sure

the years had changed us

but I sensed your energy

even in different skin

you represented him

whom I loved and left

when I forced the realization

that passion we never shared

you saw me and smiled

they were your lips

you took my hand

and with the pigeons we walked

in another life we were

meant for each other

and in the night

we moaned with each other

I never once thought

you’d return to my dreams

as a lover, as a man

the man you never were

I peered into eyes

that were not yours

but were their replacement

they undressed me

until I eagerly

opened to your release

I let you inside

one final time

perhaps to make up

for the lay I refused you

all those years ago

in this dreaming

you were the best

confirming its unreality

yet I loved you that night

until I awoke

shaken and soaked

the last nightly visit

we’ll ever make

the birds were there

they must have brought me to you

does your Scorpio

leave you restless

searching for your

former fire

as I searched for

a midnight lust?

the pink began to melt

into hues of brilliant violet

as the blue took to green

they circled in our ecstasy

to make witness to

the last gasp

you’ll ever make escape from me
